Jaws of Life was a punk rock band that played together for 19 years in Austin, Texas (1983-2002). This version of the band consisted of Mark Kenyon (vocals/guitar), Dotty Ferrell (vocals, bass guitar), Tony Rivera (drums) and Skip Hiatt (guitar). Jaws of Life opened for many local bands including Scratch Acid, Big Boys and the Dicks. The band performed at well-known local venues such as Liberty Lunch, The Ritz, Melodrama Theater and Voltaire’s Basement. In the early days, the band performed in outlandish costumes that reflected the punk ethos of the time. Through songs such as Snakebite, Accused of Witchcraft and Phantom of Drugs, the band’s driving rhythms and straight-forward chord structure captured the heartbeat of punk rock in Austin.
Angel City Instrumental was used for the play “Angel City” which was performed by Austin Community College under the direction of Shelby Bramer. In 2000-01, Skip was nominated for the B. Iden Payne Best Sound Design of the Year award by the Austin Circle of Theaters.
Swine King was a punk band that flourished in Austin, Texas for eight years, 1991-99. Had Tonz of Fun!! The band performed at clubs such as Liberty Lunch, Chances, Stubbs, Emo’s, Continental Club and Hole in the Wall. In 1999, the band recorded an album, Gargantuan Fantasy Mall. Swine King’s performances brought out large local audiences who enjoyed the sense of fun and absurdity the band projected through their costumes and music.
